 Group Lotus Plc is a British manufacturer of sports cars that is currently owned by the Malaysian motor company Proton. There are have been a number of high profile Formula 1 racing drivers involved in the company throughout its history including Ayrton Senna, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill and Jim Clark to name but a few. The Lotus Company was first established by university graduate Colin Chapman in 1952 and set up his headquarters in Hethel within Norfolk. Chapman died in 1982 and eleven years later was bought by General Motors. By 1996 Lotus was owned by Proton who owns the majority of the company’s shares.

 Lotus has had a very successful career in the highly prestigious Formula 1 series, winning the championship no less than seven times. They were a very strong team in F1 from 1958 right though to when they left the sport in 1994. Lotus has recently decided to re-enter the world of Formula 1 and compete in the 2010 season for the first time in 16 years.

 The production cars that Lotus has made have been sold all over the world and some of the most famous previous models include the fantastic Lotus Seven, the Elan and the finely sculptured Esprit. The current range of Lotus cars includes the hugely popular Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige models although other present models include the Europa S and the stunning Evora. Lotus has also spent a great deal of time and money producing the Eco Elise which has been blessed with some excellent reviews regarding its performance and its environmentally friendly power plant.
