Like many of the super car producers the Maserati Company started out by designing and manufacturing racing cars in 1926. The company was originally based in the Maserati brothers’ home city of Bologna in Italy but moved its headquarters to Modena in 1940 once the Orsi family bought the company. By 1957 Maserati had left the racing scene after the terrible Guidizzolo accident which killed 9 spectators, 2 drivers and Guidizzolo himself. After the accident Maserati focused on the production of road cars. The first real road car to come off the Maserati production line was the beautiful Maserati 3500 GT which stayed in production till 1964. 

Since the release of the 3500 GT Maserati produced a wide range of luxury, GT and mid engine models. In 1968 Maserati was bought by Citroën although Adolfo Orsi stayed as the company’s president. By 1975 the Maserati Company was taken over again, being bought by Argentinean racing driver Alessandro de Tomaso. The final change of hands happened in 1993 when Fiat bought the company. The current Maserati range includes the Coupe, Spyder II, GranSport, Quattroporte V and hugely popular Gran Turismo.

The stunning Gran Turismo has a V8 engine which produces 434bhp and can accelerate from 0-62 in 4.9 seconds. This stunning looking car has won the hearts of many but the expense of owning any super car can be vast.
